Guiding Principles of SOCAP Canada
Commitment to Ethics
The consumer affairs professional recognizes, promotes and supports the direct
relationship between ethical business practices and the long-term growth and profitability
of business.
Professional Conduct
Professional responsibilities are governed by ethical considerations for both the
short-term and long-term consequences of any business decision. Resist pressures to act
for the short-term only.
Strive to ensure fair treatment of everyone and balance the principles of justice with
an understanding of special responsibilities to individuals.
Always represent accurately and honestly the views of the consumer to the company as
well as the company's positions to the consumer.
Maintain relationships on the basis of honesty, accuracy, confidentiality, timeliness
and appropriate consultation with others.
Policy Making
Maintain a balance between consumer and corporate interests in policy-making decisions
by actively participating in the policy-making process and by recognizing that a diversity
in viewpoints is inevitable, healthy and essential to a balanced policy decision.
Dispute Resolution
Always adjust and settle consumer disputes on the basis of appropriate research. Ensure
that issues arising from dispute resolutions are presented in policy-making decisions.
Education
Commit to a program of continuing education and consistently strive for growth to remain
a source of reliable information for consumers and the company.
Publicity
Strive to ensure that all advertisements and offers provide consumers with sufficient
information for them to make decisions and take actions which best meet their goals and
needs.
