Privacy Information

Organizations covered by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act must obtain an individual's consent when they collect, use or disclose the individual's personal information. The individual has a right to access personal information held by an organization and to challenge its accuracy, if need be. Personal information can only be used for the purposes for which it was collected. If an organization is going to use it for another purpose, consent must be obtained again. Individuals should also be assured that their information will be protected by specific safeguards, including measures such as locked cabinets, computer passwords or encryption.

What is Personal information?

Personal information includes any factual or subjective information, recorded or not, about an identifiable individual. This includes information in any form, such as:

bullet

age, name, ID numbers, income, ethnic origin, or blood type

bullet

opinions, evaluations, comments, social status, disciplinary actions

bullet

employee files, credit records, loan records, medical records, existence of a dispute between a consumer and a merchant, intentions (for example to acquire goods or services or change jobs)

Personal information does not include the name, title, business address or telephone number of an employee of an organization.

SOCAP Canada collects only the business information of its members. The SOCAP Canada Membership Directory is distributed annually and only to members in good standing. The SOCAP Canada Membership Directory is kept and maintained as part of our mission to:

bullet

foster and maintain the integrity of business in dealings with consumers

bullet

encourage and promote effective communication and understanding between business, government and consumers

bullet

define and advance the consumer affairs profession

If a guest attends a SOCAP Canada event or otherwise requests information from SOCAP Canada, business information of these contacts are generally kept for 3 months.

Our membership directory is forwarded to SOCAP International on a quarterly basis in order to allow our affiliates to distribute conference information and allow our members access to the affiliate's resources. Our membership directory is never sold or distributed to anyone else.

This statement appears on the published copy of our membership directory:

"Terms of Use: All information in this directory, including names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses are the sole property of SOCAP Canada and may not be used by any individual, group, organization or SOCAP Canada chapter for any type of solicitation without the written authorization of the SOCAP Canada Board of Directors. Any unauthorized use of the information contained herein may be subject to penalties."
